About Us
Sunrock Akitas is a small kennel that makes its home in in Southern California Wine Country, near Temecula. We were formerly in Tucson, AZ. We are dedicated to breeding sound, healthy Akitas that exemplify the breed standard. Our breedings are done with a specific purpose in mind and we thoroughly review pedigrees and health histories of the dogs we intend to breed.
All of our dogs are put through a minimum of health tests before we will consider breeding them. Our health testing includes but is not limited to hips, thyroid, and eyes. We also evaluate elbows and knees.
Equally important to us is temperament. We take special care to socialize all of our dogs. Our dogs are our family and all have time in our home. We have 4 females and one male who are permanent house dogs. We take great pride in the fact that all of our dogs are sweet, loving, even tempered and well adjusted family members.
Our first encounter with an Akita in 1986 forever changed our lives. We had to wait for 8 years to get our first Akita. Finally after years of research and waiting we got Asia. She was purchased as a pet in 1993 and has been a part of our life ever since. Asia was the beginning and was so inspiring to us that in a very short period of time we have grown from a one Akita, one German Shepherd Dog household to a home for fluctuating numbers of Akitas and Parson Russell Terriers (formerly known as Jack Russells). Asia was our German shepherd’s best friend until the day our German died. For days she mourned our German Shepherd - Tyedye. Asia hid in the bathroom tub insisting that the shower curtain be pulled shut. If it was not pulled, she would pull it closed. Our love for this breed was deepened by our girl’s devotion to her lost friend. We truly believe her sense of loss was and still mirrors our human experience of the loss. The Akita’s deep love and attention to every detail of your life continues to fascinate and amaze us.
